Through a combination of musicianship and showmanship, conductor Arthur Fiedler made the Boston Pops Orchestra into an American institution and also became the best-selling classical conductor of all time. Known for keeping performances informal and sometimes self-deprecating, Fiedler managed to popularize the format, despite criticism from some of his contemporaries whom he referred to as ‘snobs’.
