Ceramics

NEW! Getting Our Hands Dirty -
Ceramics for Mommy and Me (and Daddy too!)
(ages 5+)         
Instructor: Jane Hendley
This fun, hands-on workshop for children and their parents allows you to get your hands dirty and learn how to create what’s in your imagination. Guided by the instructor, you’ll play with clay using basic handbuilding techniques. Participants will complete a unique project that will be fired and can be picked up the following week.

Clay Basics for Kids (ages 6-8)
 Instructor: Jane Hendley
Encourage creative play as children learn fundamental pottery techniques while having FUN! Students will learn how to pinch, coil, slab and model clay. Typical projects include creating animal sculptures, fashioning and decorating cups or bowls, and creating real or imaginary tools.

Clay Basics for Kids II (ages 6-12)

Children will explore exciting and challenging new projects in this class, building upon skills learned in Clay Basics for Kids! Students must complete the beginning class prior to taking this course.

Fiber Arts

Summer Workshops (ages 9-12)
Instructor: Cherri Hankins
Children ages 9-12 years will have fun exploring a sampling of fiber arts while trying their hand at different techniques and styles, all while creating pieces they can use or enjoy wearing! Sign up for one workshop that interests you, or try them all! Students who stay for both morning and afternoon sessions on the same day may lunch with the instructor.

Tie Dye  
Twisting, pleating, banding and stitching are all techniques explored in this tie-dye class. Students can bring in 100% cotton items to tie-die and items will be provided by the instructor. Tie-die terrific Tees, dye your dungarees, or pigment your pillowcase. Students will have the opportunity to explore some dyeing ideas of their own.

Felting 

Felting is the art of making fabric from loose tufts of carded and teased wool. The class encompasses the basic techniques of wetfelting wool into beautiful wall art, wearables, and cool stuff to jazz-up your room.

Tapestry Weaving with a Twist       
         

Weaving is a big accomplishment for young people. It involves a step-by-step process to accomplish a complicated goal. Students will produce their own simple design, which they will metamorphose into a vibrant, composition in fiber. Tapestry techniques include slit tapestry, interlocking tapestry and rya knotting.

Getting Stitchy      
                                    

Stitch it up! Pandas, purses, pillows or patches would be possible projects. Sewing and embroidery are the basis of this class. Translating ideas into finished fiber projects is the greater goal. Students in the class learn to transform ideas into workable concepts, then into works-in-progress, then into ACCOMPLISHMENTS (treasures)!

Jewelry

NEW! Children’s Memory Wire Bracelet & Necklace
(ages 10-15)   

Instructor: Pat Whitlow
This bracelet and necklace set are made from easy-to-use memory wire. No closures (toggles, etc.) are required. Students will also be shown examples of other projects they can make using this simple jewelry making technique.

NEW! Children’s Strung Bracelet (ages 10-15)
Instructor: Pat Whitlow
In this class, learn to use crimp beads and toggle closures in making this pretty beaded bracelet strung on beading wire. Once this technique has been learned, you will be able to make other projects on your own.

NEW! Children’s Strung Anklet (ages 10-15)

This brightly colored anklet will be strung on beading wire and finished with a lobster claw clasp and crimp beads. Once learned, this same technique can be used later in making your own projects.

Literary

Words Gone Wild
Instructors: Brian Rock (author) & John Moerner (illustrator)
(Creative Writing & Illustrating workshop for children ages 8-12 years)
Young writers can unleash their creative side with this workshop hosted by author, Brian Rock and illustrator, John Moerner. Participants will learn several surefire story-starting techniques including clustering, dictionary digging, and “the amazing story machine.” Our aspiring authors will learn how to find great story ideas anytime and anywhere. They will then learn how to enhance those stories with illustrations that really bring their characters to life!

Junior Kindergarten Drawing (ages 4-5 years)

These drawing classes build and strengthen kindergarten readiness skills with new, fun, age-appropriate pictures each week. Students will learn to follow instructions, increase their attention span and ability to stay on task, learn to hold a pencil correctly and gain fine motor and handwriting skills.

Cartoon Adventures (ages 6-12)

Have you ever wanted to learn to create wild, imaginative and exciting cartoons?  Then this is the class for you!  Young Rembrandts instructors will teach you how to draw original cartoon characters placed in fun and whacky scenes.  You will learn to draw emotions, expressions and wild and crazy movements.  Artists’ will learn quick and easy techniques for making anything they can imagine come to life!

Watercolor for Kids (ages 7-12)

Develop your child’s creative interest and skills in this fun, relaxed class designed to teach basic watercolor techniques. Children will experiment with color, simple design & composition, and with ‘found tools.’ Supplies will be provided, but a list for the students to build their own material source at home will be discussed.

Young Rembrandts Visual Arts CAMPS for Children

Drawing Camp – Mysteries of Ancient Egypt (ages 6-12)        
Hop on your camel, pack your sunscreen and prepare yourself for a wild and mysterious trip through Egypt!  We will learn about the Egyptian period, people, cultures and treasures.  We will investigate decorative objects found in treasured tombs including sarcophagi, hieroglyphics and more.  We will learn drawing techniques and styles to create masterpieces full of artifacts and Egyptian imagery.

Drawing Camp - Castles, Dragons & Jesters (ages 6-12)  
Put on your suit of armor and get ready for some wild drawing adventures!  You will enter the land of medieval times and explore the majesty of castles, knights, fairy princesses and, of course, dragons.  Students will draw a variety of characters and items familiar to this time, including: jesters juggling, jousters, catapults and more.  Join us this summer for fun adventures from this long-ago time.

Drawing Camp - African Safari
(ages 6-12)
                
Become your own crocodile hunter and set out on our own Safari adventure!  Artists will explore the exciting land and habitats of Africa as we learn about and draw a variety of animals that inhabit this land.  Climb aboard your elephant and learn techniques to draw amazing landscapes of the African jungle.  To keep things fun, we will also explore the African Safari through the exciting technique of cartooning.  Our exploration through Africa allows for a bounty of adventure and creativity.

Teen Wheel Throwing (ages 13-17)
Instructor: Jane Hendley
Learn how to create basic pottery forms using fundamental techniques such as centering and throwing a cylinder, in this class designed especially for teens. Basic pottery forms, such as a cup, bowl and plate will also be demonstrated. Emphasis is placed on both function and aesthetics as teens develop their ceramic skills with their peers.

NEW! Building A Collage (ages 15+)
  Instructor: Ichshe Sandler
Creating a collage is fun and simple! Learn cutting techniques, use of space and color, and how to create optical illusion within your work. Starting with a large coffee table book you choose based on your interests, participants will create a finished piece ready to frame and hang on your wall. Students will also create smaller collages perfect for personal note cards to send to family & friends.
